Brad Pitt has praised his fiancée Angelina Jolie for being "heroic" following her shock announcement that she recently underwent a double mastectomy as a breast cancer preventative measure. As OKMagazine.com previously reported, Jolie lost her mom, Marcheline Bertrand, at 56 years old due to cancer, and she wants to make sure that doesn't happen to her own kids.  Brad Pitt has praised "heroic" Angelina Jolie for her decision to undergo a double mastectomy The 37-year-old actress broke the news via an op ed piece in the New York Times, revealing she just finished three months of procedures, which has reduced the odds of her getting breast cancer from 87 percent to 5 percent. Watch: Angelina Jolie is opening a school! Not surprisingly, Brad is fully behind Angelina's decision, praising the mother of his six children for her bravery. Angelina said she underwent the procedure so she could assure her children they would not lose her to breast cancer “Having witnessed this decision firsthand, I find Angie’s choice, as well as so many others like her, absolutely heroic. I thank our medical team for their care and focus," the actor said in a statement. This is a happy day for our family.” Angelina said she made the difficult decision so she could assure her children—Maddox, 11, Pax, 9, Zahara, 8, Shiloh, 6, and twins Knox and Vivienne, 4, "they don't need to fear they will lose me." Angelina, pictured here on April 4, underwent the procedure after discovering she had the BRCA-2 gene “My mother fought cancer for almost a decade. She held out long enough to meet the first of her grandchildren and to hold them in her arms. But my other children will never have the chance to know her and experience how loving and gracious she was," the Oscar winner said. OK! They have asked if the same could happen to me. I have always told them not to worry, but the truth is I carry a ‘faulty’ gene, BRCA1, which sharply increases my risk of developing breast cancer and ovarian cancer.” Angelina heaped praise on Brad for his love and support throughout her ordeal Jolie said she has decided to speak out to urge the “many women who do not know that they might be living under the shadow of cancer” to get tested. Cancer is still a word that strikes fear into people’s hearts, producing a deep sense of powerlessness. But today it is possible to find out through a blood test whether you are highly susceptible to breast and ovarian cancer, and then take action.” And, she praised Pitt, her partner of eight years, for his support and love throughout her ordeal. Angelina's mom, Marcheline Bertrand (right) died of ovarian cancer in 2007 at just age 56 “I am fortunate to have a partner, Brad Pitt, who is so loving and supportive. So to anyone who has a wife or girlfriend going through this, know that you are a very important part of the transition," she said. "Brad was at the Pink Lotus Breast Center, where I was treated, for every minute of the surgeries. We managed to find moments to laugh together.
