The Bee Gees made their mark on pop culture with their contributions to 'Saturday Night Fever.'By Fallon Prinzivalli Robin Gibb Photo: Getty Images The disco-music world lost another soldier just days after its queen, Donna Summer, passed away. On Sunday, Bee Gees member Robin Gibb died after a long battle with colon and liver cancer. The musical group composed of Gibb and his brothers Barry and Maurice reinvented disco in the late 1970s and became a mainstream success. But it was the inclusion of their music in the John Travolta film "Saturday Night Fever" that really put their stamp on pop culture. The band of brothers composed and performed a majority of the songs on the soundtrack, and up until Whitney Houston's musical collection for "The Bodyguard," it was the best-selling soundtrack of all time. Producer Robert Stigwood had approached the Bee Gees after the film wrapped to see what they could pull together for the soundtrack, and shortly after, "Night Fever," "More Than a Woman," "How Deep Is Your Love," "You Should Be Dancing" and the classic "Stayin' Alive" were born. The latter song, featured in the beginning of the movie, jumped onto Billboard's Top 100 at #1 immediately following its release and stayed there for four weeks. To this day, the record has sold more than 40 million copies and is one of the top five best-selling albums of all time. Robin Gibb and his brothers went on to star in "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band," a musical adventure co-starring '70s icon Peter Frampton that centers on a small-town band that finds success in the music industry. Unfortunately, they also come to discover deceit as their instruments and their hometown of Heartland are put in jeopardy by a wicked force. The movie was loosely based on the off-Broadway production of "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band on the Road" and featured covers of original Beatles songs from their album of the same name as well as Abbey Road. Over the years, the Bee Gees' songs have been featured in well over 100 films and soundtracks, including "50/50," "The Fighter," "Despicable Me," "The Book of Eli," "Sex and the City," "Zoolander" and "Good Will Hunting." The hit Fox musical series "Glee" also paid tribute to the band in a recent disco episode titled "Saturday Night Glee-ver," in which the cast covered six of the band's hit songs. Fellow actor and musician Jordin Sparks told MTV News at the 2012 Billboard Music Awards that she was saddened by Robin Gibb's passing and recalled the time when she discovered the Bee Gees' music. "Barry Gibb, when I was on '[American] Idol,' he was one of our mentors, and it was so amazing to meet him. I actually discovered my love for Bee Gees music through that week, and 'Too Much Heaven' and 'Emotions' are two of my favorite songs, and 'Stayin' Alive,' of course — classic. But it's so sad. I just can't [believe it]." Barry Gibb is the last surviving member of the Bee Gees. Brother Maurice Gibb died in 2003 following abdominal surgery. 'Her songs are so iconic that people use them as shorthand,' expert tells MTV News about late singer's tunes being all over pop culture.By Kara Warner Donna Summer Photo: Fotos International/Getty Images The news of Donna Summer's untimely passing Thursday (May 17) weighed heavily on all those who knew and loved the undisputed Queen of Disco. Despite the fact that "disco fever" lived and basically died in the 1970s, Summer's music continues to live on. Her many unforgettable hits like "Last Dance," "Love to Love You Baby" and "She Works Hard for the Money" transcended genres and left an indelible mark on all pop culture, from the music charts to television and film. A quick perusal of Summer's eclectic IMDb page demonstrates the fact that her music is the go-to for filmmakers and show-runners looking for that perfect dance number in their TV show or film. For photos of Donna Summer through the years, click here. "Her songs are so iconic that people use them as shorthand either to convey disco or those songs lend themselves to montage-type stuff," Entertainment Weekly music editor Leah Greenblatt told MTV News. " 'She Works Hard for the Money' is always used for when a lady is going about her business. Songs like 'Love to Love You' and 'I Feel Love' are almost like a 'bow-chicka-bow-wow,' in that they always convey sex, whether that's in an ironic way or in a real way." Two relatively recent comedic examples include the memorable love scene/orgy in "Zoolander" set to "Love to Love You" and Cameron Diaz's group dance number in "Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle," set to "Last Dance." "A lot of her songs were almost cinematic in the way that their lyrics and music were arranged," Greenblatt said of the repeated use of Summer's songs for television and film. "A lot of [scenes] can go out or end on 'Last Dance.' 'She Works Hard for the Money' is all about when a woman has to go out and earn in a movie; it's the perfect music cue. And when someone is having a threesome with a Sherpa or whatever, her music was so great for that." Greenblatt went on to say that Summer's songs will continue to provide the soundtrack to key moments in our lives. "There was a time when disco was really derided and dismissed, but it would be really hard to find a person over 25 or 30 who doesn't have these songs as part of their DNA. Whether or not you liked disco, it's really hard to deny her voice and her talent," she said. "Her music stands out because she was such a great singer and because a lot of her songs were about emotions too. You can really feel in her voice that she means it. "Also, how many artists have music that has been featured on 'Sex and the City,' 'Parks and Recreation' and in 'Frost/Nixon'?" Greenblatt added. "For whatever reason, comedians love to use her too. There's the campy tributes but also a sincere love for her. And anytime anyone takes their clothes off [in TV or film], someone has got to play 'Hot Stuff.' Sacha Baron Cohen's 'Dictator' stunt has us wishing we could see Brad Pitt, George Clooney and Johnny Depp in costume.By Gil Kaufman Johnny Depp in "Dark Shadows" Photo: Warner Bros "The Dictator" has spoken. After a flap erupted over Sacha Baron Cohen's plans to walk the red carpet at Sunday's Oscars in the character of Admiral Gen. Shabazz Aladeen, the leader of the fictional Republic of Wadiya, the comedian responded by issuing a stern warning to the "Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Zionists." And while the fake war of words is all in good fun (and publicity), it got us thinking: What if some of Hollywood's other biggest stars decided to ride Cohen's medal-bedecked coattails and use movie's biggest night to drum up a bit of hype for their projects? And so, we give you our wish list of other characters we hope to see come to life once the flashbulbs start popping on Sunday afternoon. Brad Pitt: We haven't seen any glimpses of what the "Moneyball" star looks like in his potentially franchise-spawning zombie flick "World War Z," but how refreshing would it be to see Hollywood's prettiest face (sorry Angelina, we meant second prettiest) take a stroll with his best gal with flesh dripping off his mug? Jonah Hill: Speaking of Pitt, his "Moneyball" co-star Hill could leave the tux at home and totally break convention by donning a white T-shirt, fake braces, bleach-blond wig, backpack and baggy jeans to promote his upcoming upcoming turn in "21 Jump Street." Or he could just wear that short-shorts cop getup. Hot! Angelina Jolie: As long as Brad's doing it, Angie might as well get her evil princess "Maleficent" on. Or better yet, get the buzz machine going again for that by donning full regalia and being carried in by a procession of armor-wearing footmen. Johnny Depp: We're not saying the cowboy suit and mask from "The Lone Ranger" wouldn't be amazing, but can you imagine the long fingernails, pasty makeup and badass green trench coat/ purple fedora look from "Dark Shadows"? Lindsay Lohan: She turns heads either way, but Lohan emerging from a limo dressed as Oscar royalty Elizabeth Taylor would slay. Owen Wilson: Nothing could get the buzz going for the long-rumored "Zoolander 2" reboot than "Midnight in Paris" star Wilson slipping into the Hansel duds and Ben Stiller pulling out some Blue Steel as his date. And it's not just upcoming movies that these actors could use as hooks to play dress-up. Since many of them get back-end and maybe even DVD cash, why not toss in one more plug for the current movies as well? That might result in famed motion-capture star Andy Serkis putting on the mo-cap suit from "Rise of the Planet of the Apes," Rooney Mara spiking up her hair and slipping into something bondage-y to reprise her "Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" character Lisbeth Salander or the cast of "Bridesmaids" taking one more trip down the aisle in those awful pink dresses. Hell, George Clooney is notorious for pranks, so if he appeared in flip-flops, baggy chinos and a Hawaiian shirt to give a plug to "The Descendants," nobody would bat an eyelash. And can you imagine the cast of "The Artist" painting themselves up in all monochromatic black and white to throw off the HD cameras? Classic. The MTV Movies team has the 2012 Oscars covered! In 'MTV First,' the 'Wanderlust' star gushes about her beau's 'leading man quality.'By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Jennifer Aniston, Paul Rudd, Justin Theroux and Malin Akerman in "Wanderlust" Photo: Universal When "Wanderlust" stars Jennifer Aniston and Paul Rudd sat down with MTV News' Josh Horowitz for "MTV First," the stars opened up about the film, which opens this weekend, and of course that much-discussed Aniston nude scene. They also talked about someone who will likely have everyone buzzing when they leave the theater: Aniston's co-star and real-life leading man, Justin Theroux. Aniston said Theroux is a "far cry" from his hippie-dippie character in the film, which revolves around an uptight New York couple who decide to shake up their lives and end up at a commune. Rudd and Aniston play that couple just looking for a change of pace. "I didn't recognize him actually, when were at the camera test," she continued. "We were at the camera test and I did not recognize him because he's usually in leather and tight black jeans and black boots and he has this very specific look that, since I've known him, he's always had. But that's sort of what's so great [about him]." The actress continued that it's his ability to change so much from his real-life look (which veers more toward New York hipster chic than Boho-chic) and personality that makes him stand out in the film. "He has a beard; it's a healthy beard [in the film]. But what I think is so awesome about Justin is that he really just disappears," she said. " 'Your Highness' was so great, and even like in 'Zoolander,' I didn't know he was that crazy DJ. He sort of morphs into things, into characters and also has a leading-man quality, which I think is beautiful. He's just great." It seems that love for Theroux doesn't begin and end with Aniston. Rudd, who has worked with him in the past in "The Baxter," is equally charmed by his ability to portray guys who are not as smart as they think they are. "He's such a smart guy and he's so talented and good at playing [those] guys. What I love about him is his subtlety. He's kind of a master of subtlety," he said. "I've been a fan of his for years."
