Breaking Dawn‘s Mia Maestro is set to star opposite Corey Stoll in FX‘s high-profile drama project The Strain, from filmmaker Guillermo del Toro and veteran showrunner Carlton Cuse. The Strain, an adaptation of del Toro’s vampire novel trilogy, formally has a pilot order, but is being eyed for a 13-episode series pickup. The Strain is a high-concept thriller that tells the story of Dr. Ephraim Goodweather (Stoll), the head of the Centers for Disease Control Canary Team in New York City. He and his team are called upon to investigate a mysterious viral outbreak with hallmarks of an ancient and evil strain of vampirism. Actress-singer Maestro, repped by ICM Partners and 3 Arts, plays Dr. Nora Martinez, who works so closely with Ephraim, they finish each other’s sentences and stumble into an affair. A brilliant biochemist, Martinez cares more about people than the diseases that threaten them, but she will soon be forced to embrace a new identity as a ruthless warrior. Del Toro will direct the pilot from a script he co-wrote with Chuck Hogan, who also co-authored the books with del Toro. Cuse, who helped develop the adaptation, executive produces alongside del Toro and will serve as showrunner, overseeing the potential series with del Toro. Hogan and Gary Ungar also serve as exec producers of the project, produced by FX Prods. This ... Read More »

It’s hard not to read a degree of self-justification into Valeria Bruni-Tedeschi’s (mostly) French-language comedy-drama “A Castle In Italy,” so we’re not really going to try. We took notice of the film in advance mainly because it made headlines as the Cannes Competition’s sole entry from a female director and, as handsomely shot and occasionally diverting as the film is, it’s also terrifyingly bourgeois. For every moment of comedy that lands or drama that touches a nerve, there are ten of “why the bloody hell should I bloody care?” or “cry me a river, you had to sell your Brueghel.” Bruni-Tedeschi undoubtedly has talent both as an actress (she takes the lead role here) and behind the camera , but we can’t help but feel that her dramatic strengths -- familial relationships, odd romances, religious (specifically Catholic) dilettantism -- could have played in a less rarefied setting to more universal sympathy. As it is, detailing the gradual decline in fortune of a rich...

Real Housewives of Orange County star, actress, mother, wife, and entrepreneur, Heather Dubrow, is dishing her best advice each week in our OK! column: Ask Heather! Last week Heather solved your tech queries and this week she's tackling all of your beauty q's—read on for her pearls of wisdom... Photos: 20 Hot Real Housewives Fashion Looks! OK!: How has your beauty style evolved over the years? Heather Dubrow: Beauty trends for yourself have a lot to do with your stage in life. When I first had a baby, there were a lot of ponytails and more of a natural look and as I started getting older it’s allowed me a little more time to put on makeup in the morning. I experimented a lot more in my 20s and 30s. Since I’ve gotten to 40, I think I’m always looking for a makeup look that I really like and I stick with that palette for quite some time. OK!: Your signature right now seems to be this flawless, smoky eye and glossy lip—what did it used to be? HD: I went through a phase where I did a very strong lip, which I think you can do more when you’re younger. I think it’s a really good idea for people to take pictures before they go out and see what they like about the their hair, makeup—the balance of the whole thing. OK!: What’s the best trick you’ve ever learned from a makeup artist? HD: A makeup artist told me to use Wet 'n Wild #666 lip liner and it’s the greatest. I line my lips with it and lightly color them in and then I use any gloss over it. I don’t wear lipstick. I wear liner and gloss. It looks great on any skin tone and that was the best. OK!: What about hair? Any hair stylist tips you’ve adopted? HD: My biggest thing about hair care is trim, trim, trim. There’s nothing more unattractive that a woman with long hair that’s scraggly at the ends. Just because it’s long, doesn’t make it pretty. Taking three inches off and keeping the ends beautiful is the way to go. OK!: What's your advice for taking care of your skin in your twenties verses your thirties and forties? HD: I think that simple is best. A very simple cleanser, toner, moisturizer, and sunscreen. First of all, our skin gets a little dryer as we get older, so you may need a little more moisturizer or a different kind of moisturizer. People also tend to develop adult problem skin. Your skin can change and I think it’s really important to be in tune with it and be careful in case you have oily patches, not to over moisturize or dry it out with with blemish creams. OK!: You are always on camera, so what are your thoughts on HD makeup? HD: I do use Make Up For Ever HD Microfinish Powder—I think it’s excellent. If you keep adding a colored powder or a heavy powder over your makeup you’re going to look cakey by the end of the day, but a light HD powder will really take the shine off and refresh you. I also think that blotting papers are terrific. OK!: What do you splurge on beauty wise? HD: I do get massages from time to time and I do get facials in my husband’s office. I love those. OK!: What are the top five beauty products you can't live without? —@livelovedesign8 HD: Cetaphil soap, Wet 'n Wild #666 lip liner, L'Oreal Elnett hairspray, my collection of Chanel lip glosses, and Tom Ford eye shadow palettes. OK!: Who is your beauty icon? HD: Jackie O. News: Heather's Advice on Party Planning! Don't miss the newest episode of The Real Housewives of Orange County TONIGHT on Bravo at 8/7 C and tweet your q's about travel and packing tips to @OKMagazine with the hashtag #OKAskHeather and she could answer you in next week's column!
