BMW to build 4-door coupe to challenge Mercedes, Porsche

BMW will build its Grand Coupe concept car, the company's development chief Klaus Draeger said. The production Grand Coupe will rival luxury coupe-styled four-door cars such as the Mercedes CLS, Audi's upcoming A7 and the Porsche Panamera.

Spy Shots: Mercedes-Benz C-Class coupe snagged testing

Filed under: Spy Photos, Coupe, Mercedes-Benz, Luxury Mercedes C-Class Coupe prototype - Click above for high-res image gallery Two months ago, Mercedes again said the C-Class Coupe would be coming, and for the first time, the greatly new-and-improved two-door has been caught outdoors. Since the existing E-Class Coupe already has the C-Class platform and roughly the same dimensions, we wondered how MB would put some daylight between it and the less expensive C-Coupe, and it looks as if Benz has addressed our questions. It appears smaller and lacks the lower character line and haunches of the E-Coupe, as well as having a different tail treatment and much less aggressive front. Even so, we like. And if rumors prove true, we might like that cabriolet and AMG version even more, as well as being able to forget that the CLC ever existed. Have a look at the new hotness in the high-res gallery of photos below. Silver Arrow concept watch unlocks the heart of the Mercedes SLS

Filed under: Mercedes-Benz, Design/Style Silver Arrow concept watch by Fabien Cacheux - Click above for high-res image gallery If you're going to make a supercar, you're going to need the watch to go with it. It's what upscale customers have come to expect. But while Mercedes-Benz has collaborated with a number of watchmakers in the past, it has yet to release a timepiece to accompany its new flagship, the SLS AMG. That's where Faibein Cacheux comes in. The budding French industrial designer has penned the concept watch you see here to compliment the Gullwing supercar. It features a tourbillon movement rotating around a central hub with a power reserve meter at six o'clock, all housed in a titanium case and affixed with a neoprene strap. And like Jaeger-LeCoultre's Aston Martin transponder, it incorporates buttons to open and close the doors remotely. ' Unfortunately the watch is just a concept at the moment, but if Mercedes could display the fortitude to bring the SLS to market, maybe it could do the same for the Silver Arrow concept watch. Leaked: Mercedes-Benz CL63 and CL65 AMG hit the interwebs

Filed under: Coupe, Performance, Mercedes-Benz, Luxury 2011 Mercedes CL65 AMG and CL63 AMG - Click above for high-res image gallery We now have first looks at the two 2011 Mercedes CL models that we've really been waiting to see: the CL63 AMG and CL65 AMG. With the front end of the standard model firmed up, there isn't the massive visual difference there used to be between that one and the AMG versions. The CL63, riding on 19-inch wheels, gets the necessary aggression added to the lower front dam, losing its chrome accent and getting mesh instead. Sharper side and rear skirts maintain the anger, but out back AMG's trademark twin oval pipes have been replaced with squoval-like tips shaped to fit the cutout. Under the hood is said to be a 5.5-liter, twin-turbo V8 with 544 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque - a full 26 ponies more than the outgoing 6.3-liter. The CL65 gets 20-inch wheels and puts some of that chrome back, applying a strip to the center of the front air dam and rear diffuser so you can tell it apart from the CL63. Or, more specifically, so people can tell your boss' CL car from yours. It keeps the joined oval pipes we've seen on 65-series AMG cars for a few years now. Under its hood resides the 6.0-liter, twin-turbo V12 biturbo giving a stout 630 hp and 737 lb-ft. You can examine both in the gallery of photos below. Lindsay Lohan's Legal Troubles: A Timeline

Actress' 90-day jail sentence is hardly her first brush with the law.By Kelley L. Carter Lindsay Lohan in court Tuesday Photo: MTV News Lindsay Lohan was sentenced to 90 days in jail and 90 days in a drug rehab center on Tuesday (July 6) for violating probation, but it was hardly the actress' first brush with the law. MTV News takes a look back at Lohan's legal issues, as well as her trouble with drugs and drinking: February 2, 2005: A personal-injury suit is filed against Lohan by Eddie Pamilton and Ilex Harris, who claim the actress injured them in a traffic accident that took place the year before. October 4, 2005: Lohan is transported to a hospital for minor injuries after she crashed her car into another vehicle in West Hollywood, California. The then-19-year-old actress collided into the passenger's side of a van that was turning in front of her, which then collided with a parked van. A passenger in Lohan's car and the driver of the van suffered moderate injuries and were transported by ambulance to an undisclosed hospital. January 2006: Vanity Fair reports that Lohan admitted she had bulimia during an interview, but Lohan denies that she has an eating disorder. The article quotes Lohan as saying, "I was sick. Everyone was scared. And I was scared too. I had people sit me down and say, 'You're going to die if you don't take care of yourself.' " January 2007: Lohan checks into rehab for the first time. "I have made a proactive decision to take care of my personal health," the singer says in a statement. "I appreciate your well wishes and ask that you please respect my privacy at this time." In December, Lohan's publicist revealed that Lohan had been voluntarily attending Alcoholics Anonymous meetings. May 26, 2007: Lohan gets arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence after her Mercedes convertible strikes a curb in Los Angeles. Police reported that they found a substance they believe to be cocaine at the scene. May 28, 2007: Lohan checks into rehab again. "Lindsay admitted herself to an intensive medical rehabilitation facility on Memorial Day," a representative for the singer/actress says in a statement. "Because this is a medical matter, it is our hope that the press will appreciate the seriousness of the situation and respect the privacy of Lindsay as well as the other patients receiving treatment at the facility." June 14, 2007: Lohan is accused of being drunk when she crashed into a parked van in Beverly Hills in October 2005, according to a lawsuit. Raymundo Ortega claims Lohan — who was 19 years old at the time — "consumed alcohol and became intoxicated" at the Ivy restaurant before the accident. July, 14, 2007: Lohan checks out of Promises rehab facility after more than six weeks and celebrates the end of her 45-day stay by soberly partying with some friends at Pure nightclub in Las Vegas. July 24, 2007: Less than two weeks after leaving a rehabilitation facility, Lohan is pulled over by police early in the morning and arrested on five counts, including driving under the influence of alcohol, driving on a suspended license and possession of narcotics. Lohan checks into an undisclosed rehab facility hours after the arrest. August 14, 2007: Lohan gets sued again, this time for assault and negligence by one of the passengers who was traveling in the car the actress allegedly chased the month prior while driving under the influence. August 23, 2007: Lohan gets charged with seven misdemeanor counts for her two DUI arrests earlier that year. She reaches a plea deal, saying she would spend one day in jail, serve 10 days of community service and complete a drug-treatment program. Lohan is placed on 36 months' probation and required to complete an 18-month alcohol-education program and pay hundreds of dollars in fines. She also is to finish a three-day county coroner program that required her to visit a morgue and talk to victims of drunken drivers. "It is clear to me that my life has become completely unmanageable because I am addicted to alcohol and drugs," Lohan writes in a statement released to MTV News. October 5, 2007: Lohan leaves a two-month rehab stint at the Cirque Lodge Treatment Center in Utah. She is also seen with her estranged father, Michael, who was carrying her suitcases. December 31, 2007: In a video posted on TMZ, Lohan drinks straight from a bottle of champagne while partying in Italy. October 16, 2009: Lohan shows up more than an hour late to a probation hearing in Beverly Hills for a progress review on her two DUI cases. She gets another year of probation tacked on due to failure to complete alcohol-education classes as required. April 26, 2010: Lohan is asked to leave the film "The Other Side." The director says Lohan was fired because she is not "bankable." June 8, 2010: A Beverly Hills judge issues an arrest warrant for Lohan and orders her to post $200,000 bail after she violates a court order to not consume alcohol while wearing a SCRAM alcohol-monitoring ankle bracelet. The warrant is recalled after bail is posted. July 6, 2010: Lohan is sentenced to 90 days in jail and 90 days in rehab for violating her probation. EXCLUSIVE: Q&A with Mercedes' global sales and marketing chief

Choosing to resurrect founding father Gottlieb Daimler's maxim 'The best or nothing' heralds the start of a marketing offensive to reassert its brand in the face of pressure from Audi and BMW. Guy Bird caught up with Dr Joachim Schmidt, executive VP of sales and marketing, to ask the 61-year old what he thinks the Mercedes brand should now stand for, the new product that will attract younger customers to help expand from about one million sales in 2009 to 1.5m by 2015 and whether Mercedes could, or even should, ever be 'sexy'.

Report: Dodge originally developed SLS AMG to be next-gen Viper

Filed under: Coupe, Chrysler, Dodge, Mercedes-Benz Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG - Click above for high-res image gallery There's a lot to like about the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG. After all, we're talking about a sleek, 563-horsepower super-Benz with functional gullwing doors and a soundtrack to melt your heart. It's the embodiment of German engineering... or is it? Inside Line cites unnamed sources who say that the SLS AMG actually began life as the next-generation Dodge Viper. The story apparently goes like this. Dodge engineers were already hard at work on the next-gen Viper, with an aluminum chassis already completed and a new suspension on the way. Mercedes caught wind of the project and decided that the chassis would be the perfect starting point for the upcoming SLS. The two teams reportedly worked side-by-side on the project until Chrysler's cash crunch caused the Dodge team to focus its resources elsewhere. The end result was a brand-new SLS for Mercedes and a hole in Dodge's Viper lineup. IL bolsters its account of the Viper-turned-SLS with the fact that early SLS test mules caught by spy photogs were fitted with ill-assembled Viper sheetmetal. While it's hard to blame Mercedes for utilizing existing engineering work (it did, after all own Chrysler at the time) to bring the SLS to market faster and cheaper, we're thinking it would have been nice to have a new aluminum chassis Viper on the streets. Here's hoping that the 2012 Viper makes us forget about our loss. Report: Joss supercar to get Mercedes power

Filed under: Coupe, Performance, Mercedes-Benz, Australia Once upon a time, the crate engines of choice for independent sportscar-makers came from Detroit. But just as the German manufacturers have raised the mantle of the muscle car with such super-sedans as the Mercedes E63 AMG, Audi RS6 and BMW M5, so to have the Germans become the new source for niche automakers. But don't take our word for it: just look to examples like the Mercedes-powered Pagani Zonda, BMW-driven Wiesmann GT, not to mention the Veritas RSIII and the Audi-engined Gumpert Apollo. The latest to join their ranks? Joss Developments Limited, creators of the eponymous Australian supercar. According to reports from Down Under, Joss has inked a deal with Mercedes-Benz to supply AMG power to the mid-engined exotic. Local off-road specialist Albins will be providing the transaxle. The news of the Mercedes contract apparently replaces the in-house 6.8-liter V8 that was originally part of the plans, and follows reports that Mercedes itself was considering plans to enter the Australian V8 Supercars touring car series. Frankenstein's Garage: Maybach coupe isn't Xenatech's first conversion

Filed under: Design/Style Xenatech conversions - Click above for image gallery Wonder where this firm Xenatech came from? The German company made headlines a couple of weeks ago with sketches of a Maybach coupe it intends to bring to market, but as you may well have guessed, the luxo-Merc isn't the first chop job the company has undertaken. Swing by the company's website and you'll find photochops of all manner of vehicles - most of them German, natch - that have been turned from sedan into coupe, coupe into sedan, and much more. The first few look like simple stretch jobs of sport-utes and sedans like the Audi Q7, Mercedes G-Class and Bentley Continental Flying Spur. But delve a little deeper and you'll find an Aston Vanquish shooting brake, Lexus LS460 coupe and pickup versions of the Porsche Cayenne and Volkswagen Touareg. A few of them are even a little prophetic: a Mercedes CLS wagon and four-door versions of the Porsche 911 and BMW 6 Series. The best part is that Xenatech claims some of these have actually been made, though it isn't saying which. Our fingers are crossed for that 7 Series with the extra headroom. Check out some of our favorites in the gallery below.
