BMW will build its Grand Coupe concept car, the company's development chief Klaus Draeger said. The production Grand Coupe will rival luxury coupe-styled four-door cars such as the Mercedes CLS, Audi's upcoming A7 and the Porsche Panamera.

The German company made headlines a couple of weeks ago with sketches of a Maybach coupe it intends to bring to market, but as you may well have guessed, the luxo-Merc isn't the first chop job the company has undertaken. Swing by the company's website and you'll find photochops of all manner of vehicles - most of them German, natch - that have been turned from sedan into coupe, coupe into sedan, and much more. The first few look like simple stretch jobs of sport-utes and sedans like the Audi Q7, Mercedes G-Class and Bentley Continental Flying Spur. But delve a little deeper and you'll find an Aston Vanquish shooting brake, Lexus LS460 coupe and pickup versions of the Porsche Cayenne and Volkswagen Touareg. A few of them are even a little prophetic: a Mercedes CLS wagon and four-door versions of the Porsche 911 and BMW 6 Series. The best part is that Xenatech claims some of these have actually been made, though it isn't saying which. Our fingers are crossed for that 7 Series with the extra headroom. The four-door coupe/hatchback/thing, previewed in concept form at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show, is set to be unveiled in final production guise at the upcoming Paris salon in September. And when it does, reports suggest that it'll be capped by a top-of-the-line RS7 packing Ingolstadt's V10 engine, sans turbos, with 580 horses galloping through all four wheels, seven speeds and two clutches. Other engines will include six or eight cylinders, burning either gasoline or diesel. The A7 is set to debut a new mid-size platform for Audi that's expected to underpin the next-generation A6 as well, but in a form targeted directly at the likes of the next Mercedes CLS, also tipped to debut in Paris. Filed under: Sedan, Performance, Chevrolet 2011 Chevrolet Cruze - Click above for high-res image gallery General Motors has been looking for ways to capitalize on the investments made in its platforms by increasing the number (and retail price) of the vehicles sharing them. Hence, reports of the next-gen Camaro sharing its platform with the upcoming Cadillac ATS and CTS successor. Now reports suggest that the General is hoping to capitalize on the Delta platform by creating more aggressive, sportily-minded variants of the Chevrolet Cruze. One option, according to the report in Motor Trend, would be to build a four-door coupe based on the Cruze. The idea would follow the same formula that took the Volkswagen CC and Mercedes CLS up-market from the comparatively humble platforms (Passat and E-Class respectively) on which they're based. The wheelbase and much of the mechanicals would carry over, but a more rakish roofline would give it a sportier profile, at the expense of rear headroom. Another option fielded once again would create a Cruze SS, with more aggressive suspension and an upgraded 2-liter turbocharged engine. The potential application of all-wheel-drive from the larger Epsilon platform, meanwhile, could be used to aid traction. Either option could stand to bridge the gap between the Cruze and the Camaro. But while the options are presented as "either or", would it be too much to ask for both?
