AP - After an anti-climatic championship capped a season of turmoil in 2009, Michael Schumacher's return to Formula One has set the stage for a highly anticipated title fight.

Filed under: Motorsports, Lotus, Racing Jarno Trulli shakes down the Lotus Evora Cup racer - Click above for high-res image gallery It's not at all unusual for Formula One drivers on teams that have connections to consumer automakers to spend some of their off time developing road cars for those companies. Countless Ferrari street offerings have been tweaked by Michael Schumacher. Last week, as Jarno Trulli was waiting for his first crack at the Lotus T127 F1 car, he spent some time shaking down the new Evora Cup racer at the Snetterton circuit in the UK. Trulli and race engineer Gianluca Pisanello spent two days working on suspension, aerodynamic and engine calibrations. The Evora will be used in a new single make series along the lines of the long-running Porsche Cup. The car is also eligible for GT4 class racing against the likes of the Audi R8 LMS and Porsche 911s. The 4.0-liter Toyota based V6 has been bumped up to 400 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque and given a dry-sump lubrication system, and its light weight will be a necessary ally in the battle with more powerful cars. While you wait for the series to get cranking, you can slake your curiosity on our high-res gallery below and the press release after the jump. Filed under: Car Buying, Motorsports, Racing Few know how to raise a future Formula One driver like Anthony Hamilton. The father of 2008 world champion Lewis Hamilton fostered his son's development from birth through his F1 debut and world title the following year, and is still one of the most visible managers or family members in the sport. But Anthony isn't only interested in getting his own son into the sport, he apparently wants to help others as well. Hamilton Sr. is in the process of arranging for several teams to lease their 2009 cars to him through his new GP Prep Drivers Academy. So far McLaren, with which the Hamiltons obviously share the closest ties, has already agreed to provide two cars, and negotiations are reportedly under way with other teams as well. The driving force, so to speak, behind GP Prep is a result of the mid-season test ban still in place in Formula One. Because testing has been so severely curtailed, many aspiring drivers don't have a chance to get behind the wheel before their grand prix debut. Case in point Jaime Alguersuari, who incidentally backs the Hamilton venture, and who completed half a season with Scuderia Toro Rosso last year but couldn't participate in a test session until just a couple of weeks ago. Or recuperating drivers like Michael Schumacher and Felipe Massa, who had to "borrow" old 2007-spec cars from Ferrari's client services department in order to get back up to speed. GP Prep will manage to circumvent the rules because it's not part of any particular team, so who's to say what they can and can't do. The costs, however unbelievably, for a single day of testing will reportedly approach those of racing a full grand prix weekend. Still, there are more than a handful of drivers who'll want to take the opportunity to get up to speed - literally and figuratively - and sponsoring teams anxious for them to get there. Filed under: Motorsports, Hirings/Firings/Layoffs, Ferrari Jules Bianchi tests for Scuderia Ferrari - Click above for high-res image gallery Ferrari got seriously caught with its pants down last year in Formula One. When Felipe Massa was sidelined with a head injury halfway through the season, the Scuderia found itself without a viable replacement after Michael Schumacher proved unfit to take his place, veteran test driver Luca Badoer failed to rise to the challenge and Giancarlo Fisichella didn't manage to score a single point. But the venerable F1 team is learning from its mistakes with the launch of the Ferrari Driving Academy. Similar to the programs run by Red Bull and Renault, the Ferrari Driving Academy was established to foster young talent along the ladder to Formula One, starting way down in karting. The program is run by Luca Baldisserri, the strategist who replaced Ross Brawn during his sabbatical and who currently serves as the team's track manager. The first pupil selected for the program is Jules Bianchi. The young French driver, managed by former Ferrari CEO Jean Todt's son Nicholas, is the scion of a successful racing family: his grandfather Mauro Biachi won the FIA GT Championship three times, and his great uncle won the 24 Hours of Le Mans and competed in nineteen grands prix. Jules himself won the French Formula Renault 2.0 title in 2007 and the F3 Euroseries in 2009, and following his test for Ferrari in December, has scored a podium finish in his debut in the GP2 Asia series. Not a bad start, so we'd better keep our eyes open for Bianchi and future Ferrari Driver Academy pupils making their way up the ladder. Press releases after the jump. Filed under: Motorsports, Ferrari, Racing Felipe Massa and Fernando Alonso lap Valencia in the 2010 Scuderia Ferrari F10 - Click above for high-res image gallery We know, we know. The pace set on track tests doesn't necessarily indicate how a given team, car or driver will perform in an actual race, let alone across a whole season. But it's hard not to read too much into it when we've been waiting for a sign since the end of last season, when the winningest team in all of motorsports - which has been working on this car since the middle of a dismal last season - with its veteran driver recovered from injury, and with a two-time World Champion taking the helm for the first time, when all these elements come together and the team absolutely dominates. Half of the F1 teams that'll be competing for honors this season descended on Valencia for three days of official testing. And when all was said and done, Ferrari had dominated the time sheets on each of the three days. The first two days saw Felipe Massa run the new car, setting the fastest times on both days. Then Alonso took his turn on Day 3, beating Massa's time and everyone else's in the process - including returning seven-time World Champion Michael Schumacher in the new Mercedes and reigning champion Jenson Button in the new McLaren. For his part, Alonso was quick to quell speculation. Reliability, fuel loads, yadda yadda yadda. But when this is the first and only indication we have of how the season is shaping up, we can't help but sit back and stroke our five o'clock shadows in contemplation. We invite you to do the same while viewing the mega gallery of on-track images below. AP - Michael Schumacher says Mercedes GP will be "competitive" this season but isn't sure if the team can win the Formula One championship.

Filed under: Motorsports, Mercedes-Benz, Racing 2010 Mercedes GP W01 - Click above for high-res image gallery We've seen the mock-up, now it's time for the real thing. After having previewed the team livery on last year's championship-winning Brawn GP car (that's both championships, thank you very much), the newly christened Mercedes GP car - dubbed MGP W01 - was officially unveiled today in Valencia, where half the F1 teams are gathered right now for the first official test session of the season. The livery has already revealed both the color scheme - reminiscent of the famous pre-war Silver Arrow grand prix cars of yore and lore - as well as the successful poaching of Malaysian state oil company (and longtime Sauber sponsor) Petronas. The biggest surprise, then, (to insiders at least) is the nose design, which reportedly cribs from the snout on the Red Bull car that challenged the team for top honors last year. Nico Rosberg is taking the car out for its debut test today ahead of teammate Michael Schumacher, who will be driving a contemporary F1 car for the first time in three years today. With the Ferrari, McLaren, Renault and Mercedes cars now revealed, stay tuned for the rest, and check out the press release after the jump and the first batch of images in the gallery below. Filed under: Motorsports, Coupe, Performance, Marketing/Advertising, Videos, Mercedes-Benz Schumacher surprises yet again - Click above to view the video after the jump Mercedes-Benz looked like it was out to change the laws of physics when it released video footage - whether factual or digitally created - of its new SLS AMG supercar driving upside down in a tunnel. Now it looks like they're out to change history, too. Retroactively. If you watch the original footage, chances are you won't recognize the test driver on duty, supernaturally talented though he appears to be. But watch it again in the new version after the jump and - presto change-o! - it was Michael Schumacher all along! Cute trick, especially considering he probably wasn't signed to his new deal with Mercedes when they made this clip. For our part, we're still surprised he's not driving a Ferrari in retirement, so at this point anything's believable.
