
KINSHASA (Reuters) - Congolese soldiers clashed with rebel fighters for the first time in nearly six months on Monday near the city of Goma, just days before U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is due to visit the troubled eastern borderlands.

BAGHDAD (AP) — A string of car bombs and shootings killed at least 57 people in Shiite and Sunni areas of Iraq on Monday, officials said, escalating fears of a return to widespread sectarian bloodletting in the country.

Violence surged in the strategically important Syrian town of Qusayr on Sunday. Activists said the offensive marked some of the most intense fighting they've seen in the fiercely contested area near the Lebanese border.

ISLAMABAD (AP) — A judge granted bail to Pakistan's former military ruler on Monday in a case related to the murder of ex-Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, his lawyer said.
