Filed under: Classics, Auctions Duesenberg Model J by Murphy: 1930 Sport Berline (above), 1932 convertible (below) - Click for high-res image galleries Recession? What recession? You certainly wouldn't know it from looking at the latest crop of results from the auction floor, where millions of dollars continue to change hands between collectors for some of the finest pieces of rolling artwork ever to grace tarmac. Especially when the vehicles in question trace their roots back to the Great Depression itself. At RM's recent Amelia Island event, a pair of early-30s Duesenbergs from the estate of one Mr. John O'Quinn brought in some big bucks. Both were Model Js with coachwork by Murphy and 265-horsepower 420-cubic-inch straight-eights with four valves per cylinder mated to three-speed transmissions. The first, a 1930 saloon, eclipsed early estimates (which placed the hammer price between $1.2 and 1.5 million) by fetching an outstanding $1,705,000 at auction. The second, a 1932 convertible, fetched a still remarkable $800,000, closer to the bottom end of its pre-auction estimates which ranged from $800k to $1 million. When, as RM points out, you consider that an average family sedan in that era cost about $500, the $20,000 sticker price on a new coachbuilt Duesenberg in its day equates to about a million today with inflation - think of it as the Bugatti of its time and you're right on track. In fact, along with the likes of Rolls-Royce and Hispano-Suiza, that's exactly who E.L. Cord had in mind when he acquired Duesenberg and added it to his empire that already included his namesake brand as well as Auburn and the Checker Cab, delivering the first customer Model Js just months before the stock market crashed. Follow the jump for more history on each of the models from the auctioneer. Filed under: Sedan, Performance, Bugatti, Luxury Bugatti 16C Galibier concept - Click above for high-res image gallery Bugatti seems intent on keeping us on the ropes regarding the production prospects for the 16C Galibier. The concept was unveiled to a very select audience last September during the Frankfurt Motor Show, but didn't debut on the marque's show stand. Bugatti pulled a similar shtick in Geneva, but we were luck enough to get a closer look at an exclusive viewing in Beverly Hills. The company has been fairly tight-lipped on whether their higher-ups at the Volkswagen group have given it the green light - leaving the matter up to speculation and conjecture - but to keep us interested, they've released this batch of photos showing what appears to be a second show car, doing its best Johnny Cash impression instead of the two-tone blue and silver paint scheme seen on the the original. Underneath the dramatic split hood sits a version of the Veyron's 8.0-liter W-16 engine, but with a pair of superchargers replacing the quartet of turbos and an eight-speed automatic reportedly in place of the Veyron's seven-speed DSG. Will we ever hear one rumbling down our streets? That's in Wolfsburg's hands now, so for the moment, we'll just have to enjoy the latest crop of photos in the gallery below. Filed under: Classics, Bugatti, Event Alert, Luxury 1939 Delahaye 165 V-12 with coachwork by Figoni et Falaschi As if classic car fans in California weren't spoiled enough with the annual festivities in Monterey, world-class concours in Palm Springs, La Jolla, Dana Point, Palos Verdes, and Pasadena, and first-rate museums like The Petersen and Nethercutt Collection, another incredible collection is being opened to the public this spring. Set to open April 15 in Oxnard, California, the Mullin Automotive Museum is the anchored by the vehicles of Pebble Beach-winner and Monterey Historics racer Peter Mullin, and promises to be another must-see attraction. According to the press release you'll find after the jump, "the Mullin Automotive Museum will pay homage to the art deco and machine age design eras (1918-1941) that produced exquisite art and magnificent automobiles." The centerpiece will be a huge collection of unrestored Bugattis, but expect to find other iconic brands like Delahaye, Delage, Talbot-Lago, Voisin and Hispano-Suiza, with an emphasis on French cars with coachwork by masters like Chapron, Figoni et Falaschi, Gangloff, Vanvooren, Labourdette, Letourneur et Marchand and Saoutchik among others. The museum will also feature art and furniture from that era and an entire floor devoted to "Club Bugatti." Besides being home to 100 of the most gorgeous flowing designs of all time, the Mullin will also house some less beautiful but equally significant vehicles including 30 unrestored cars and a whole roster of Grand Prix and Le Mans cars. So if you're in the area, be sure to stop by. Until then, follow the jump for the full press release.
