Florence And The Machine's Epic Breakthrough: A VMA Cheat Sheet

Four-time nominees will perform at Sunday's VMAs.By Gil Kaufman Florence Welch of Florence and the Machine Photo: WireImage We hate to say we told you so, but we totally told you so. Back in January, we picked English rock group Florence + the Machine as one of the potential breakout artists of 2010, and, well, we can't lie, we were totally right. Not only did the band's debut album, Lungs, top the charts in England, but thanks to flame-haired singer Florence Welch and a penchant for high-energy performances, the Machine became a staple on festival bills across the world this year and the go-to soundtrack for TV shows like "Grey's Anatomy" and "So You Think You Can Dance." With a sound that mixes the art-rock attack of Yeah Yeah Yeahs with Lily Allen's cheeky soul croon and a bit of the White Stripes' garage ooze, the band has gained attention for Welch's penchant for injuring herself onstage while scrambling up lighting rigs and leaping off speaker stacks. "I'm quite unrestrained, and it does lead to some accidents," Welch told us in January. "Onstage, I seem to have this force field of protection, so I rarely injure myself onstage, even as I'm climbing up rafters or jumping off of things." After giving up the drums to take the lead-singer role, Welch was shocked, to say the least, by her band's four nominations at Sunday's MTV Video Music Awards. The nods for Best Rock Video, Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography and, yes, Video of the Year for the trippy "Dog Days Are Over" clip were described as an "iconic event" by the singer, who said she's watched the VMAs on TV since she was a kid. "It's one of those things: It's not real life, it's a dream scenario," said Welch, who is essentially a one-woman band augmented by session players on live dates. "So for me to be actually a part of it feels like I'm in some sort of parallel universe. It's kind of strange and wonderful and terrifying all at the same time." It's quite a journey from the recoding of "Dog Days," which Welch said originated in a closet where she and a friend banged their hands against the walls and used pans as instruments to lay down the beat. The visually striking, stark video casts an ashen-faced Welch as a kind of future-shaman leader of an eclectic band. Wearing a white dress and white makeup, she does a freaky hippie dance as the members of her troupe appear on the spotless white set: first two blue-skinned, bouffant-wearing dancers, a pair of red-hooded harp players, masked percussionists, a 10-person gospel choir and a kabuki cymbal player. She spends most of the video emoting the dynamic song's lyrics, wearing a geisha outfit with red eye makeup and a furry dress. That is, until she starts waving a blue flag and making her bandmembers disappear one by one in a puff of dust. The clip is notable for its lack of a traditional narrative, but also for the way it puts the full attention on the charismatic singer as she sells the song with just some simple dance moves and colorful outfits. It took a while for Lungs, which was released in July 2009 in England, to catch on in America. By the time U.S. audiences began taking notice, the CD had already reached #1 in the U.K., and audiences there became well-acquainted with the story of how it was inspired by a temporary breakup between Welch and longtime love Stuart Hammond. The first single, the rollicking "Kiss With a Fist," was included on the soundtracks of "Wild Child" and the Megan Fox flop "Jennifer's Body." But it was the use of "Dog Days" in ads for the Julia Roberts summer hit "Eat Pray Love" that helped the album start its march up the Billboard charts in America this summer, as did the placement of another single, "Cosmic Love," in shows ranging from "The Vampire Diaries" to "So You Think You Can Dance" and "Grey's Anatomy." It also didn't hurt that in May, it was announced during the slow reveal of the "Twilight Saga: Eclipse" soundtrack track list that her song "Heavy in Your Arms" would be included on the hit release. After lighting up such British festivals as Glastonbury, Reading and Leeds in 2009, the group was confirmed for October's Voodoo Fest in New Orleans, as well as Sunday night's VMAs. Will Welch upset the heavily favored, 13-time-nominated Lady Gaga at the big show? Tune in to find out. The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday. The party starts with MTV News' VMA Pre-Show at 8 p.m., followed by the main event at 9 p.m. ET. Fans can go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 if they are Verizon subscribers) to vote for Best New Artist from now through Sunday. Related Videos Gearing Up For The 2010 VMAs! Film Festival Buzz: Natalie Portman, James Franco, Joaquin Phoenix And More

New movies from Ben Affleck, Casey Affleck, Danny Boyle and others are drawing attention at this year's Telluride and Venice film festivals.By Eric Ditzian Natalie Portman at the Venice Film Festival last Wednesday Photo: Danny Martindale/ Getty Images Around this time last year, George Clooney's "Up in the Air" opened at the Telluride Film Festival and rode that initial buzz to six Academy Award nominations. A year later, another crop of high-profile films have premiered at Telluride and the Venice Film Festival, including new work from Danny Boyle (director of 2009's Oscar winner "Slumdog Millionaire"), Darren Aronofsky ("The Wrestler") and Ben Affleck ("Gone Baby Gone"). Which films will we be feting in the weeks and months to come? Here's a look at the most buzzed-about movies from both fests. "Black Swan" Just days before Aronofsky jetted off to Venice to present his follow-up to "The Wrestler," the director confessed to MTV News that he gets very nervous before one of his film's premieres. "When 'The Wrestler' showed at Venice the last time, I walked out in the middle," he said. "I couldn't handle it. I snuck back in the end. It was not a pleasant experience." Aronofsky may have been nervous, but "Black Swan" was indeed well-received, with rapturous praise reserved for star Natalie Portman that immediately makes her a Best Actress Oscar front-runner. Pete Hammond of Deadline Hollywood dubbed her turn a "dazzling tour de force." The film follows Portman as a ballerina ready to take over the lead role in her company's production of "Swan Lake," until a rival dancer (Mila Kunis) shows up and begins to drive Portman toward madness. " 'Black Swan' is a brilliant mind f---," wrote Peter Sciretta of SlashFilm. "It is one of the boldest films I've seen produced by a Hollywood studio in years." "127 Hours" Danny Boyle debuted "Slumdog" at Telluride in 2008, a decision that came to be seen as a wise one, and the critical darling went on to sweep the Oscars months later. Boyle's back now with a true story about a hiker (James Franco) who becomes trapped under a boulder in the wilderness and must saw off his own arm to escape. Like Portman, Franco is being discussed as a potential Oscar nominee. "[Franco] pulls off a virtual one-man show," said Stephen Farber of The Hollywood Reporter. "The actor already has demonstrated tremendous versatility, and just this year, viewers have seen him as one of Julia Roberts' lovers in 'Eat Pray Love' and as Beat poet Allen Ginsberg in 'Howl.' Here he manages to create a radically different character -- an extroverted adventurer who is forced to turn reflective. Expect Oscar to come calling next year." "The Town" Ben Affleck's heist drama does not premiere until Wednesday (September 8), but anticipation is high based on the director's past work and the new film's impressive ensemble, including Jon Hamm, Blake Lively, Jeremy Renner, Rebecca Hall and Chris Cooper. "It's hard to disavow a movie when you've written, directed and acted in it," Affleck told The New York Times. "This is an emblem of the person I want to be going forward." "The King's Speech" British director Tom Hooper might not be well- known on American shores, but his new film just might be the buzziest one to debut at Telluride or Venice. Colin Firth stars as member of the British royal family who overcomes numerous obstacles to become King George VI. He's joined by Helena Bonham Carter, Geoffrey Rush and Guy Pearce, among others. "After several additional screenings and a rare standing ovation Sunday night as part of a companion tribute to Firth ... the film has provoked talk of widespread awards recognition," said The Hollywood Reporter. "While other films also attracted partisans, 'The King's Speech' was seen as having the broadest support across a broad array of awards categories." "I'm Still Here" The questions began early in 2009: Just what the heck was going on with Joaquin Phoenix, with that bushy beard and the unhinged public appearances? Phoenix and Casey Affleck filmed the entire unraveling, and now audiences are starting to decide for themselves: documentary or mockumentary? Trouble is, not everyone is convinced they've come to the right conclusion. " 'I'm Still Here' finally addresses the question of whether Joaquin Phoenix's decision to give up acting to pursue a hip-hop career was on the level or a setup. The answer seems to be: a bit of both," reports Variety. Affleck, of course, is not exactly setting the record straight, which only amps up anticipation for the film. "Elliptically, I would say ... I sincerely don't want to influence people's interpretation," Affleck told reporters in Venice, according to The Associated Press. "I can tell you there is no hoax. It makes me think of 'Candid Camera' or something."

'Last Exorcism' Tops Friday Box Office

'Takers' with T.I. and Chris Brown nabs second place.By Mawuse Ziegbe Ashley Bell in "The Last Exorcism" Photo: Lionsgate The Box-Office Top Five #1 "The Last Exorcism" ($9.4 million) #2 "Takers" ($7.5 million) #3 "The Expendables" ($2.7 million) #4 "Eat Pray Love" ($ 2.2 million) #5 "The Other Guys" ($1.9 million) "The Last Exorcism" scared up major ticket sales on its opening day. The supernatural horror flick raked in an estimated $9.4 million on Friday. "Exorcism," which is directed by Daniel Stamm and boasts gore-master Eli Roth of the "Hostel" series fame as a producer, drew enough moviegoers to grab the top spot. The film, which follows a documentary crew in rural Louisiana hired to capture the creepy antics of a supposedly possessed young girl, goes light on digital wizardry in favor of scoring scares with practical effects. In the second place slot is the star-studded heist flick "Takers." T.I., Chris Brown, Idris Elba, Hayden Christensen and Matt Dillon work the screen in a story about a crew of suave thieves set to carry out a major job. The thriller snatched $7.5 million in Friday ticket sales. Sliding to third place is the heavily-armed action fest "The Expendables." The fiery, butt-kicking flick raised $2.7 million on Friday, after ruling the box office for the past two weeks and sitting comfortably at the top spot. Friday's haul edges the total domestic tally of the Sylvester Stallone-helmed enterprise near the $75 million mark. "Eat Pray Love," featuring marquee vet Julia Roberts, settled into fourth place. The soul-searching movie adapted from the runaway hit memoir of the same name, nabbed $2.2 million in box office receipts on Friday. The loopy cop comedy "The Other Guys" continues to power along, taking in $1.9 million and rounding out Friday's top movies in the fifth-place slot. Although "Avatar" wears the crown for the highest-grossing film ever, the re-release of the James Cameron adventure, revamped with previously unreleased footage, failed to crack the top ten with only $1.2 million in Friday ticket sales.
