
EXCLUSIVE: Mike Lobell, the veteran producer whose 14-years of persistence helped make the remake Gambit happen, is getting close on three other projects with strong elements. He has re-teamed with former partner, writer/director A Film By Alan Stuart Eisner, an ensemble comedy which so far has Project X‘s Oliver Cooper, Shirley MacLaine and Robin Williams attached, with Rob Reiner making a cameo. Lobell reports that the film has added Sienna Miller, Isla Fisher and Audra MacDonald. Eisner is a comedy dealing with a young man making a documentary to learn what happened to his family during WWII. He is out looking for financing. Gambit, by the way, ended up with Michael Hoffman directing a script by Joel and Ethan Coen. Colin Firth, Cameron Diaz and Alan Rickman star and CBS Films releases October 12. At the same time, Lobell is getting traction on This Man This Woman, the adult love story written by Frederic Raphael. The project has gotten a boost with the attachment of Richard Gere, who long ago sparked to a film which focuses on the trials and tribulations of a marriage. Refresh for latest… There’s a Scandinavian flavor to Cannes Briefs this morning. Zentropa and Nordisk Film are to produce the adaptation of the 1945 Swedish bestseller The Long Ships with director and writer under negoatiations. Author Frans Gunnar Bengtsson’s adventure novel is set in the 10th century and tells the story of Red Orm, a Viking who embarks on a journey that ends up changing the course of history. Zentropa CEO Peter Aalbaek Jensen (Nymphomaniac) is producing with Sisse Graum J?rgensen (The Hunt, The Salvation). Exec producer is Lone Korslund (Headhunters, Kon-Tiki). Rainmark Films’ Tracey Scoffield and Frank Doelger, in partnership with Germany’s Beta, have acquired film rights to Derek B. Miller’s novel Norwegian By Night. The company is developing the project from the American-born writer with a director soon to be attached. The story follows an 82-year-old widower and ex-Marine who lives in Oslo with his granddaughter and her Norwegian husband. When he witnesses the murder of a woman in his apartment complex, he rescues her son and races across the Norwegian wilderness, chased by the murderers and the police. The deal was struck with Miller’s literary agency Janklow & Nesbit. Rainmark produced the Cannes official selection title Muhammad Ali’s Greatest Fight, which screens Wednesday, and Doelger is exec producer of Game Of Thrones.
