Genesis, Jimmy Cliff, the Hollies also inducted in show featuring Phish, Green Day and more.By James Montgomery The Stooges' Iggy Pop performs with Greenday's Billie Joe Armstrong at the 25th Annual Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony Photo: Michael Loccisano/ Getty Images NEW YORK — It opened with a Phish show, nearly exploded into a (very well-heeled) proto-punk riot, got giddy on a fix of sunshiny Swedish pop, and finally wrapped up with a '50's-tinged tribute. It was the 25th Annual Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, back in NYC after a one-year sojourn in Cleveland (where the titular hall actually exists). And while it may have been lacking the star-power of previous year's ceremonies — Eminem and Metallica in 2009, Madonna and Justin Timberlake in '08 — it certainly showcased the breadth and depth of this thing we call rock music. 2010 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Ceremony ABBA, Genesis, the Stooges, Jimmy Cliff and the Hollies were the performers that headlined the 2010 class, inducted into the hall by the likes of the Bee Gees' Barry and Robin Gibb, and Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong. Variety was the theme of the night, expressed in the wide range of performances and the revered tones of the inductors, which ranged from genuinely geeky (Phish's Trey Anastasio, who inducted Genesis and spoke at length about the group's "seven-note guitar lines" and the technical prowess of their 1973 album Selling England by the Pound) to gleefully amped (Armstrong swore a whole lot as he inducted the Stooges). The show began with Phish running through Genesis's proggy "Watchers of the Sky," then Phil Collins, Tony Banks, Steve Hackett and Mike Rutherford took the stage to accept their award, thanking Anastasio for his "really convincing argument" about the oft-derided band's legacy. Original singer Peter Gabriel wasn't there because he was "rehearsing for an orchestral tour," according to Collins. Phish then played a second Genesis tune, "No Reply at All." Up next were the Stooges, long denied a slot in the hall despite their obvious influences on everything from punk to metal, and they more than made up for lost time. First, Armstrong — who was "very excited and nervous as hell" to be inducting them — strode to the podium and launched into a heartfelt speech that praised the band's commitment to "blood and guts, sex and drugs ... peanut butter and poetry." The Green Day frontman rattled off basically every band the Stooges had ever influenced, a list that included Nirvana, Siouxsie and the Banshees, the Queens of the Stone Age "and my f---ing band too." "It is my honor to induct into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame — and it's about f---ing time — the Stooges!" Armstrong exclaimed. Stooge main man Iggy Pop strutted onto the stage — still wearing a shirt — gave the tuxedoed crowd a double middle-finger salute, and then began a genuinely touching speech that mentioned late members Dave Alexander and Ron Asheton, shouted out "all the poor people who actually started rock and roll" and concluded with a thanks to all his fans for giving the band "a second act," getting choked up as he said it. Pop turned the mic over to fellow Stooges James Williamson and Ron's brother Scott and began unbuttoning his white dress shirt as they spoke. He then stormed off to the stage, and, aided by bassist Mike Watt and tenor sax skronker Steve Mackay, ripped through a pair of the Stooges' burners — "Search and Destroy" and "I Wanna Be Your Dog" — the latter of which saw Iggy prowl the front row of the audience, belt out the chorus under the watchful gaze of Dr. Oz (for real), then invite anyone and everyone onstage. Green Day and members of Pearl Jam gleefully obliged, as did a few fairly radical men and women in their formalwear. Back in the press room, Iggy explained his impromptu invasion thusly: "Well, you can't really stage-dive in a place like this." Legendary record exec David Geffen and British rock act the Hollies were inducted next, followed by Reggae legend Jimmy Cliff (who was lovingly introduced by Wyclef Jean) and then, in perhaps the night's most anticipated moment, globally revered Swedish pop quartet ABBA, who hadn't performed together in public in nearly 25 years. Unfortunately, only half of the group's members — Anni-Frid Lyngstad and Benny Andersson (who were married once upon a time) — showed up to accept their trophies from the Gibbs. They seemed touched by the honor, and Andersson took to the piano to perform one of the group's most masterful hits, "The Winner Takes It All," with country star Faith Hill on vocals. There was a tribute to the night's honored songwriters — a list that included luminaries like Otis Blackwell and Jesse Stone (who wrote songs made famous by the likes of Elvis Presley and Jerry Lee Lewis) — featuring Rob Thomas, Ronnie Spector, Eric Burdon, Chris Isaak, Peter Wolf and Fefe Dobson, who rolled through the hits and then closed the show with a version of Stone's "Shake, Rattle and Roll." By this point, the telecast was nearly four hours long, and the audience — though weary — cheered mightily. It was worth the wait. Variety takes time, after all. News comes a week after rapper began his one-year jail sentence.By Jayson Rodriguez Lil Wayne's Rebirth Photo: Universal Motown Lil Wayne's rock efforts have paid off: His Rebirth album has been certified gold, moving more than 500,000 copies, according to the Recording Industry of America. The announcement, courtesy of his label, comes one week and one day after the rapper turned himself to begin a one-year jail sentence for a 2007 gun charge in New York. On Rebirth, the New Orleans rapper eschewed turntables in favor of guitars as he produced a rock-concentrated project, which he called a "freedom album." "Yes, the album is still rock," he told Billboard in October. "I play guitar on 80 percent of the songs, and there's a lot of rock influences and rock beats. I also have Travis Barker on the album. But I don't want people to think I'm trying to do something I can't do. Don't think you're going to put on the album and hear me screaming and singing. ... Don't worry about that. [Laughs.] When people hear me say rock, they may get a little scared, like, 'Oh, God. What is he going to do?' When I said I was doing a rock album, it was about doing a freedom thing. This album isn't hip-hop. When I do my Carter albums, I know I've got to rap, I know I've got to spit. I know the words I've got to say and the subjects I've got to talk about. I also know the things I shouldn't say, the things I shouldn't talk about. There's none of those limits on this album. I say what I want, how I want. That's what this album is: a freedom album." The lyricist still raps plenty on the album, including on the Eminem-assisted "Drop the World." Rebirth was delayed a number of times and at one point was mistakenly shipped from Amazon.com to customers before its intended release date. What did you think about Rebirth? Would you want to hear another rock project from Lil Wayne? Let us know in the comments below! 'It's definitely gonna come out,' Atlanta MC says of Dre's long-awaited opus.By Shaheem Reid Stat Quo Photo: MTV News Stat Quo says he doesn't know exactly when, but Dr. Dre is definitely going to drop Detox. It's not a myth. Stat has been writing on the project for several months. "It's definitely gonna come out," the Atlanta native said of Dre's long-awaited project. "I always said it was gonna come out in 2010 light years ago. I also at one point thought it would never come out. Being around Dre and the energy that's being created, all I can say is that it's incredible. It's totally left-field from what's going on — I really appreciate what he's doing as an artist. Even though from the outside looking in, if I'm other people, I'll be like, 'What's taking him so long?' But it's gonna be worth every second, every hour, every minute. Every week, every year we waited for the album. "The songs I've heard since I've been around are all really special," he continued. "It's so important to hip-hop that this record comes. It's our saving grace. A lot of the radio stations are going rhythmic and going away from certain types of urban music. You can only go to contemporary station to get certain soul-type music. The whole platform is changing. An album like his can bring a boost to the music that's going on." Well, at least we know that Dre is busy. Stat appears in Dr. Dre's new Hewlett-Packard commercial — in the short, Dre is at the boards producing while Stat is in the vocal booth. Quo's fans have been waiting for him to put out his debut almost as long as Dr. Dre's followers have been anticipating Detox. Stat signed to Shady/Aftermath around the same time as 50 Cent, watching while 50 Cent put out an album and waited while G-Unit commandos Tony Yayo, Young Buck, Lloyd banks and Young Buck dropped. When he was finally on deck in 2007, plans for his LP were squelched once again. "When it was time to put a record out, the powers that be [at Interscope] that keeps the lights on at the company was like, 'We need either a 50 Cent or a Dr. Dre or an Eminem record," Stat tells. "So I had to make the decision: 'OK, it's time to leave.' We parted on good terms. Initially when I first left, I was upset because I wanted to put my album out under that umbrella. At the end of the day, my relationships with Dre and Em is still intact and it's all good." Last year, Stat inked a deal with former G-Unit executive and producer Sha Money XL's, Dream Big Ventures imprint. His album Statlanta is due in May. The first single is "Success" and on the ditty, Stat raps from the perspective of success being his girl. "For me, it's a situation of, you start a journey," he explained. "This album is my odyssey. It's like I'm finally completing it and putting it out. People are like, 'You been working on this album for seven years.' I've made this album, like, four or five times. When I first signed to Shady/Aftermath, it had one particular vibe then I worked with Em, and the vibe changed. Then I worked with Dre and the vibe changed again. Then when I left Shady/Aftermath I made another album thinking I was gonna go to another major, the vibe was different at that point. When I hooked up with Sha and the Dream Big thing, the vibed changed again. This is the vibe you getting now. So Statlanta has been made seven, eight times. I got a bunch of old Statlantas, but I have to make the music more relevant to what I have going on at this particular time. Times changed." Stat says his LP will depict what's going on in is life right now. "This album — I had to look at the game and what's going on in music," he offered. "It's a lot of people complaining. I think too many artists are trying to fit into boxes and lanes that don't fit their personalities. If you're a 31-year-old male or female, you shouldn't be rapping about what a 16-year-old male or female is going through — unless you're trying to enlighten them on a perspective of 'I've been where you've been.' But 'I'mma drop my booty low an make music they're excited about,' that's not really your life. You look like the old dude in the club. That's just not hot. This [album], I wrote it from a standpoint of what I was going through in my life and the struggles that not only I've been through, but the people around me have been going through." 'The biggest lesson I learned is patience,' Atlanta MC says.By Jayson Rodriguez B.o.B. Photo: MTV News Upstart Atlanta MC B.o.B aka Bobby Ray isn't your average rapper by any means. First of all, he plays the guitar — and while Kanye West, Drake and Lil Wayne have tried their hands at shredding, none of them can spin a wayward, folksy tune like he can. Combine that with co-signs from Eminem and T.I., who signed the Mixtape Daily Firestarter alum to his Grand Hustle roster, and you have the makings of a breakout star. So how, exactly, does Bobby Ray plan on introducing his soulful Southern lyricism? With his new single, "Nothin' On You," a sprightly, musical number from his forthcoming debut, B.o.B. Presents: The Adventures of Bobby Ray. "Introducing B.o.B or Bobby Ray — it takes more than one song to do it," the rapper told MTV News from red carpet of BET's "Rip the Runway." "But I feel like this song is really genuine and really sincere, so I feel good about people finding out about me through 'Nothin' On You'." The song, featuring Bruno Mars, currently rests at number 37 on the Billboard Hip-Hop/R&B chart. Although "Nothin' On You" is still picking up steam, it's already received praise — the program director at Los Angeles' KIIS FM told Entertainment Weekly that B.o.B would be the next big thing on radio. Bruno who, along with Phillip Lawrence from production team the Smeezingtons, helmed the track, gushed over Bobby Ray's talent. "It's great — he's an incredible artist," the singer said. "We actually wrote and sung on the hook. We'd been fans of his for a minute and he came in and just murdered those verses. Hopefully the rest is gonna be history." The rapper has been signed to Atlantic Records for some time now and graced the pages of 2009's XXL Freshman 10 issue, with fellow rookies Kid Cudi, Asher Roth and Wale, among others. Waiting on the bench wasn't without its challenges. At one point B.o.B threatened to pull the plug on his promising career before it even started, though he later backtracked and said the rumors were exaggerated. "It does get frustrating, trying to be as free as possible but at the same time working with people," the rapper told MTV News last year. But with a new mixtape — the DJ Drama-hosted May 25th — in the streets and a release date on deck for his debut, April 27, Bobby Ray said he learned the value of patience. "I will tell you this about the journey as an artist to get to the point where you actually have a release date," he offered. "The biggest lesson I learned is patience. Once you get here it's like, OK, now you have to keep going. You never get to an end. So you have to be patient and pace yourself. Take time. It's like building a house. You gotta take time, build a foundation, get the walls right, get the electricity right, get ther plumbing right and make sure when you turn the light on that the door don't open up."
