In the crush of new releases that slammed the multiplexes in the fourth quarter of 2012, it was easy to forget what a heavily hyped and disastrously received movie DreamWorks Animation's "Rise of the Guardians" was. The last film released under DreamWorks Animation's distribution pact with Paramount (who is planning to ramp up its own animation production after the financial and critical success of "Rango"), it should have been kids movie catnip – a team of super-heroic mythological creatures team up to fight evil, like "The Avengers" of bedtime stories. But, the failure of "Rise of the Guardians," while an adequate hit overseas, still cost DreamWorks Animation north of $100 million. And now the fallout: "Mr. Peabody & Sherman" moves from fall 2013 to spring 2014 (getting the fuck out of the way of Disney's "Frozen"), "Me and My Shadow" gets shelved, and an unspecified number of layoffs will...

Henry Selick, the genius behind THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS, JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH and the Oscar® and BAFTA nominated CORALINE, is moving forward with Academy Award nominated producer Josh Penn (BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD) and K5 International on his latest feature THE SHADOW KING. THE SHADOW KING is a deliciously magical tale about nine-year-old New York orphan Hap who hides his fantastically weird hands with long fingers from a cruel world. The 40th Annual Annie Awards are being given out tonight at UCLA’s Royce Hall with a who’s who of the animation world in attendance. Besides being a celebration of the best in one of Hollywood’s most successful genres, the Annies can be a good Oscar indicator if last year is anything to go by. Paramount’s Rango won the 2012 Annie’s Best Animated Feature and went on to take the Oscar for Animated Feature Film. This year sees Disney Animation Studio’s Wreck-It Ralph, Pixar’s Brave, LAIKA/Focus Features’ ParaNorman, the Walt Disney Studio’s Tim Burton directed Frankenweenie and The Pirates! Band Of Misfits from Aardman Animation and Sony Pictures Animation as both the Annie’s Best Animated Feature and the Oscar’s Best Animated Feature Film nominees. DreamWorks Animation’s Rise Of The Guardians, Sony’s Hotel Transylvania and GKIDS’ The Rabbi’s Cat are nominated tonight for the top Annie Feature Award but did not get Oscar noms. While his methods may keep studio accountants up at night, there's no denying that Gore Verbinski knows how to put spectacle on the big screen. Over the course of three "Pirates Of The Caribbean" movies he's made a lot of people a lot of money, while "Rango" showed he's got surreal flavors rolled up in his blockbuster sleeve. And while this summer's "The Lone Ranger" will hope to repeat his multiplex domination, for his next effort it looks like he's changing gears significantly. Verbinski has signed on to direct "Pyongyang," an adaptation of the graphic novel by Guy Deslisle. Penned by Steve Conrad, who wrote Verbinski's low key "The Weather Man," the book by French-Canadian cartoonist Delisle chronicles his travels in North Korea (something rare for a Westerner), thanks to a work visa obtained for his gig working on a children's cartoon show. But while there, he gets accused of espionage. Here's...
