Susan Ward was born April 15, 1976, in Monroe, Louisiana. Her father was a policeman and her mother worked double duty as a nurse and professor at a nearby university. Though her dad did police work to pay the bills, his real passion was raising exotic animals. Growing up with a mother who loves to cure the sick and a father who loves animals, it wasn't a surprise that young Susan harbored dreams of becoming a veterinarian.

Walking through a New Orleans mall at age thirteen, Susan was discovered by a modeling scout who offered her the chance to move to New York and work full-time in the fashion industry. The surprisingly levelheaded Susan didn't think this was her big chance to be a star, but rather her big chance to make enough money to pay for veterinary school
