Legendary actress/comedian will host on Mother's Day, May 8, with former 'SNL' cast members Tina Fey, Amy Poehler and others.By Jocelyn Vena Betty White Photo: Jamie McCarthy/ Getty Images After fans took to Facebook to launch a campaign to get veteran funny girl Betty White on "Saturday Night Live," it was announced earlier this week that she would in fact be making an appearance on the show in some capacity. Now comes word that the star will be hosting the show in May. White will be onboard for the May 8 episode, which also happens to be Mother's Day. The show will feature appearances by a number of female "SNL" vets including Tina Fey, who will also host the show on April 10 with musical guest Justin Bieber; Amy Poehler; Molly Shannon; Maya Rudolph; Ana Gasteyer and Rachel Dratch. In an interview with USA Today, "SNL" executive producer Lorne Michaels admits he "always wanted" White to host the late-night comedy program. "Years ago, I turned it down three times," White says. "It's so New York, and I'm not New York at all. But my agent said he'd divorce me if I didn't do it, and I love my agent." And while White has starred in and won awards for many of her memorable roles on shows like "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" and "The Golden Girls" and last summer's movie "The Proposal," and has even more recently caught the eye of Robert Pattinson, it was her very funny Super Bowl commercial that was the catalyst for her getting the coveted gig on "SNL." "It took on a groundswell," Michaels says of the Facebook campaign, which began in response to White's appearance in the Super Bowl spot. "It isn't something we would have said no to," but the campaign "validated that, 'Oh, that'd be fun.' ... It was the outpouring of affection from fans, and we feel the same way." White herself is excited about all the attention. "It's lovely, and at my age it's certainly unexpected," she said. "I've got so much energy, it's ridiculous. I love working. My schedule is a feverish one, and I'm used to that."

On May 7, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) will have to turn in its final draft of the controversial regulations, which calls for automakers to build cars and trucks with windows that prevent 45% of the sun's energy from entering a vehicle by 2014 and 60% by 2016. Vehicle manufacturers have argued that it will be expensive to meet the requirements, and other groups are complaining for their own reasons. Heck, there was initially concern that off-roaders might lose their beloved Jeep Wrangler altogether. Thank goodness they came to their senses. While several different groups have significant concerns about the proposal, it looks like CARB might finally be listening to one group in particular - law enforcement. It seems that California's sheriffs, police chiefs and crime victim groups are calling for the plan to be amended... and CARB is actually listening. According to The Detroit News, The California Police Chiefs Association, California State Sheriffs Association, Crime Victims United of California and other groups are concerned that the required window glazing needed to meet the new regulations will seriously degrade cell phone signals, as well as those from ankle monitoring bracelets. We wouldn't want to lose track of felons now, would we? The other big concern is that 911 calls might not get through if the window treatment prohibits a strong signal. That seems to be sending CARB back to the drawing board, with suggestions coming that the plan will be revised before the May 7 deadline. As a refresher, the idea behind the "cool cars" regulation is to save gas and reduce emissions. Cooler cars reduce their air con use, and with California's overflowing freeways, that could mean a significant drop. In fact, CARB is predicting that the regulations will save 700,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide by 2020 - the equivalent of parking 140,000 cars a year. 'I don't know why or how, but it's been wonderful,' actress says of Internet campaign to get her on the show.By Kelley L. A Facebook fan page implored NBC to hire White as a host of the show, saying that the comedic actress is universally known and admired. Apparently, the dreams of nearly half a million fans are coming true. Former Golden Girl, Betty White, confirmed to People magazine at Elton John's Oscar viewing party Sunday (March 7), that she will in fact appear on "Saturday Night Live" in the near future. The drive for the 88-year-old actress to began shortly after her hilarious take in a Super Bowl Snickers ad, and fans joined up on a Facebook page, devoted to getting her on the NBC show. Just weeks earlier, she'd scoffed at the idea, calling it "ridiculous." "I don't even know where that came from," she said then. "That just came out of left field. It's ridiculous. I don't think ["SNL" creator and producer] Lorne Michaels even knows about it, so we won't worry about it. But on Sunday, when asked by the magazine, "Are you doing 'Saturday Night Live'?" she answered, "Yes," even if she remains perplexed by the groundswell of support. "I don't know why or how," she said, "but it's been wonderful." White didn't say anything about the details of the "SNL" stint, not even when she might be appearing on the show. A publicist for NBC told MTV News they couldn't confirm the news. White recently starred with newly minted Oscar winner Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds in the romantic comedy "The Proposal," and she was recognized with a lifetime achievement award at the Screen Actors Guild earlier this year.
