Sources say Lohan is sleeping, eating well in custody so far.By Jocelyn Vena Lindsay Lohan Photo: MTV News Two days into Lindsay Lohan's jail sentence, her mother, Dina, and sister, Ali, visited the Century Regional Detention Facility in Lynwood, California, where the actress is currently being held. They spent more than an hour at the jail, but it is unknown whether or not they actually met with Lindsay, People.com reports. Although exceptions can be made, visiting hours at Lynwood are on weekends for family and friends, who can also leave money for inmates to buy necessities in the jail. A rep for Ali Lohan hadn't responded to MTV News' request for comment about the visit as of press time. According to a source in the jail, Lohan is worried about her safety but has "slept soundly for most of her time in custody" and is being "cooperative." While Lindsay will likely only serve two weeks of her 90-day sentence, she has expressed concerns about being around the other inmates despite reassurances she would be kept away from the general public. Lindsay has been adjusting to life behind bars. On Wednesday, according to the report, she ate breakfast, which included cold cereal and a hard-boiled egg. A source adds that Lindsay has "devoured all the food served to her." Popeater.com reports that Lindsay, who has released two albums, has already come up with a way to pass her time in custody. A source tells the website that "Lindsay is going to spend her time in jail writing new songs that she will record the second she gets out. Her emotions are so raw at the moment the material will be her best ever. It will definitely get nominated for a Grammy." The website also reports that while her mother and sister have made efforts to visit her, her father is unwelcome at the jail. "Her father will not be allowed to visit her," a source said. "She wants no part of him." Ironically, the woman in the cell next to Lindsay's is "Pretty Wild" star Alexis Neiers, who was one of the people involved with a string of robberies in the Los Angeles area that targeted celebrities including Lohan. A watch of Lohans' was found at Neiers' home. 'Being in that environment and having those daily surroundings, it's going to affect you,' Tip tells Complex magazine.By Mawuse Ziegbe T.I. Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Almost immediately after he finished a jail bid for gun charges in March, T.I. set out to reclaim his status as a hip-hop king — hitting the mixtape circuitand huddling in the studio with Lady Gaga and Swizz Beatz. But that doesn't mean jail wasn't a serious setback. "It did make me worse in a sense. ... Putting me in prison took me off [a positive] path a little bit, and now I'm working to get back on that path — or at least back on the path to the extent that I was before I went in," T.I. told Complex magazine. Before heading to jail, T.I. was serving part of his sentence by counseling at-risk kids and notched over 200 speaking engagements warning young people about violence on the MTV show "Road To Redemption." T.I., who is on the cover of the magazine's August/September issue, says that the jail atmosphere definitely took its toll. "I lost a little bit of my positive focus during that period of incarceration. Being in that environment and having those daily surroundings, it's going to affect you." One result was that he actually tuned out when it came to music. "I didn't listen much to records when I was in there. Music is what I do every day. That made me more homesick than anything," he said. Instead, T.I. logged lots of TV hours to pass the time. "I watched series like 'Sons of Anarchy.' I'm a fan. It's another form of 'The Sopranos' to me. I watched football and ESPN." But, the most popular show on the cellblock — "True Blood" — held no appeal for him. "I couldn't really [watch it]. They got into that sh-- heavy," T.I. said. "The whole prison damn near shut down. Everybody left off the yard, like, ' "True Blood" coming on!' They went crazy for it — there's a bunch of sex in it, so they were tuning in for that." T.I.'s King Uncaged drops in September. The power to control living things and objects from a distance is a popular supernatural talent in science fiction and fantasy: Witches fling spells at foes and X-Men send chairs and tables flying with telekinesis, for example. But when it comes to remotely controlling biological organisms, science has a few tricks up its sleeve, too--although there's nothing metaphysical about them. Manipulating biological processes with minimal interference, from the cellular level to the behavior of whole organisms, is a burgeoning scientific effort to better understand how living things work and to develop more effective treatments for a range of medical disorders.

Some bacteria have adapted to super-cold environments for millions of years. And scientists have isolated some of the essential genes that allow bacteria to tolerate their harsh living conditions--because these same genes might help in the creation of new vaccines. The investigators published their findings in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences . [Barry Duplantis et al., http://bit.ly/bqVUWp ]Researchers from the University of Victoria in British Columbia [and the NIH Laboratory of Intracellular Parasites] isolated temperature-sensitive genes from some bacteria that thrive in the frigid Arctic. They inserted nine of these cold-loving genes into a bacterial pathogen called Francisella tularensis . At about room temperature, the cells propagated. But when they had to cope with warmth equivalent to the core body temps of mammals, the bacteria died.

Shai Agassi wants to put the world into electric cars whose batteries can be swapped out at one of his futuristic "gas" stations. But just as the cells in flashlights and laptops need lithium to run, so do -- swappable batteries or not -- electric cars. And some are now saying that will make lithium, in our increasingly battery-dependent society, increasingly hard to come by.
